What is menopause and how can it affect a woman's life?

Peri-menopause and menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's menstrual cycles, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55 (but can also be much younger). It signifies a decline in oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone production, leading to various physical and emotional changes.

Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, and sleep disturbances, which can significantly impact daily life and overall well-being. Many women also experience changes in sexual function and may face challenges related to self-image as their bodies transition, or they find that intercourse is now extremely painful therefore no longer enjoyable. Furthermore, the emotional toll of symptoms can lead to increased anxiety or depression which can also be increased due to the inability to exercise due to aching joints or loose weight as easily as they could in the past.

While menopause is a normal stage of life, understanding and managing its effects can empower women to seek support, explore lifestyle changes, or consider medical options to alleviate symptoms. Emphasising self-care and open communication with healthcare providers can help navigate this transformative period more comfortably and positively.

It is also worth noting that HRT not only improves and manages symptoms it also helps to protect the heart from heart disease developing and bones from bone disease and can reduce the onset of developing Alzheimer and Dementia, which can all be due to lack of oestrogen and testosterone. As many women are now living a 3rd of their life Post Menopausal it is more important than ever to take precautions to improve and prevent ill health so women can live much longer and healthier.
